Week 11 (October 29 - November 4)

3). Pick one concept from the assigned reading this week, not already discussed, that you found useful or interesting and discuss it.

The concepts that I am going to discuss in this post are Synchronous and Asynchronous communication and the pros and cons that go along with each. Synchronous communication is when you are simultaneously listening, speaking, and giving feedback. So basically it is a way of multitasking while communicating. Asynchronous communication is "one-way" road of communication, meaning that you give information, the other receives it, and then vice versa. There is no multitasking going on with this type of communication. The good thing about synchronous communication is that you get things done much faster, and since it is quicker, you get ideas flowing faster. One negative thing about this type of communication is that it might get too complicated for some, because some people find it hard to listen and speak at the same time. Information can also be lost with this type of communication because your mind wanders while trying to focus on what the other person is saying. A good thing about asynchronous communication is that you take the time to really focus on what someone is saying, because you don't have any other distractions so you can really pay attention. A bad thing about this type of communication is that you get things done much slower. It might take you longer to reach a solution or get an idea started because only one person is speaking at a time.

  1. Hi Manager of Mischief! I thought the concept you picked for this week's discussion was very informative. You did a great job explaining the concept of Synchronous as it is the way of communicating while multitasking. Asynchronous was explained as a one-way type of communication (pretty much the opposite of synchronous). I like how you mentioned the pros and cons for both types of communication. Personally, I believe that Synchronous is a better way of communication simply because it means you are able to have successful communication while distractions are happening around you. In communication, I believe that the hardest part of active listening is having something distract you, then throw you off. You pointed out a con in Synchronous which was how it can become very complicated for some people. I really agree with your statement on that because I think synchronous only works if you have that natural ability to multitask very well. It's obvious that synchronous is definitely not fit for everyone. I also agree with your pros and cons on asynchronous. I agree that even though it might be a little slower, it's very effective because you are focusing on one thing at a time without having to think about other things that will ultimately make you lose focus. Although the con of asynchronous is that it takes a longer time, I think the pros of it (having a more successful outcome) is a lot more important.

  2. Hey Raya!
This is a really good post. I made asynchronous and synchronous communication much easier for me to understand. I agree with your post entirely. The pros and cons of both asynchronous and synchronous communication are clearly stated. Depending on the group in which you are communicating with, both ways of communication have strong reasons as to why you should use it. In groups that I communicate with every day, I prefer synchronous communication. It works quickly and can cover more ground in the time provided. However, if I am on the go, or in a place that won’t allow me the proper time, asynchronous communication is better. Working on emails, or even text messages, while I am going from one place to another, or in an environment in which I could not readily speak with the person, still gets work done towards the task. It even allows me the ability to think out how I want to say what I want.
