Week 13 (November 12 - 18)

1). (Regarding chapter 11) Distinguish among a forum, panel, colloquium, and symposium as a mans for making a public presentation. Which one would you prefer? Why?

According to our book, a forum is format for speaking and listening to a larger audience. It is kind of like having a public discussion where the audience is allowed to fully participate. A panel is a public format in which a group of experts, typically between four and eight, discuss a problem or make a decision in front of a live audience. Generally, the experts on the panel use humor and somewhat of an informal dialogue to keep the audience's attention and interest. A colloquium is a form of public discussion where a group of experts, typically between three and six, discuss a problem while following a problem-solving format. These experts are usually chose for their different views, and are problem-solving in front of an audience but are with a moderator to facilitate their interaction. A symposium is a series of two to six short speeches made on different aspects of a difficult problem. The speakers are generally experts on different aspects of the topic. Personally, I would prefer a panel because I would like having the ability to interact with the audience, and use humor to solve the issue.

  1. Hi Raya, I enjoyed reading your discussion for this week. You did a great job briefly explaining each type of format used during presentation. I prefer the a panel presentation as well because I think it's a better to way to interact with your audience without feeling uncomfortable or pressured. Although I thought all the formats for presentation can be done in a succesful manner, I think both you and I navigated towards the panel because of the use of humor it uses to solve issues. The forum, colloquium and symposium seemed to have a very structured way of how things were to be presented by the experts which can be difficult to be a part of if you don't feel at ease. The biggest difference I noticed was that panel uses more informal dialogues rather than formal. The other formats seem to use formal discussions during their presentation. You did a great job distinguishing the differences of all these types of presentation. If I were to have a second choice, I would choose the forum format because they use a technique of open public discussion and give the audience to fully participate which I think you would enjoy as well!
